Irma Helena Heiskanen

I´m by nature a “dreamer” – following the dream-footsteps of my North Savo families from both sides of ancestors. As psychologist (retired) I´m oriented in traditional Ecological knowledge and Finno-Ugric Folklore and try to establish my way between “worlds” of Natural Science and traditional Knowledge.

The last 25 years I have been making free research of visual history and symbolic language of Finno-Ugric women’s handicrafts and cultural Forms of Involvement with the Life of Ancient Animal Mothers. Based on this research I have published the book (in Finnish) “On the Traces of Finno-Ugric Ancestress – traditional Ecological wisdom and ornament Language” (Original Title: Esiäitien kädenjäljillä – perinne-ekologista viisautta ja ornamenttikieltä), Lore & Loom, 2017.  (http://192.168.8.1/html/home.html)

Based on my research I have created a series of Animal totemic Mothers aprons from recycled and left over textiles connected with Food and Creation of Life in Cycle of the Year.
